When I opened a UBL savings account last month I specifically asked for Zakat exemption and I was told that my previous form from UBL fund manager will be acquired and I do not need a new form.

Today April 27th 2017, I went to branch for an unrelated matter that happened to be last day of submission of zakat form.I asked for reconfirmation of my zakat status just to be sure and I was told that I was not exempt.

ON asking for help I was given all kind of conflicting information such as to fill bond on 100 rupees stamp (it’s 50 rps), withdraw all my money, get a CC etc. I asked if I could submit a zakat form on a photocopy document which could later be attested (as is case in some branches including UBL but they declined).

I went to the branch manager Sabina Salahuddin who was very over-bearing and dismissive. She started to blame me for not having done that before and became a big aggressive.I told that I did not want any confrontation and just wanted her help to get this issue resolved as her subordinates were giving conflicting advise.

Instead of taking responsibility of her subordinates lack of knowledge or trying to sort my problem she became argumentative and raised her voice.

She did not display any empathy and told that it was my fault and started interrogating me about how many accounts had I opened and why I did not read the fine-print, implying that I was ignorant.

I went out found a stamp seller, filled it and then came back to the branch and submitted it. I told Sabina Salahuddin that I was not satisfied with the service and casual attitude of her and her people. She remained unapologetic. Then I told her that since I did not feel welcome by her and her staff and for poor service I was thinking of closing my account. She remained un-concerned and shrugged and waved me out of her office.

Other that the above the overall atmosphere of this branch is chaotic and unhygienic. The people at front desk dress and act very unprofessionally. The man at the front was vert rude when an old man asked his help in filling a form.

Based on the above I will be closing my account from UBL within the next week.I will also ask my family and friends to avoid UBL because of the lack of professionalism and caring service.

I will continue using Fund Manager service as their people have been nice and helpful.

UBL branch banking needs to train its people in both aspects of business – technical knowledge and soft skills.
